“RTK” shows up constantly in drone mapping, usually without explanation. It’s worth understanding, because it’s the difference between data you can build on and data you can only look at.
RTK stands for Real-Time Kinematic positioning. In plain terms, it’s a GPS-correction technology that makes the drone’s position data dramatically more precise — accurate to within a few centimeters rather than several feet.
That precision flows directly into the data. With RTK, the maps and models you receive are accurate enough to measure against and make real decisions from.
When your data is accurate to within centimeters, you can trust the measurements you pull from it — distances, areas, volumes, elevations. Without that accuracy, you have imagery that looks useful but can’t be relied on for anything dimensional.
The difference between “nice imagery” and “data I can build from” often comes down to whether it was captured with RTK precision.
When you hire a mapping provider, ask whether they capture with RTK. It’s a simple question that tells you immediately whether you’ll get decision-grade data or just good-looking pictures.
